After completing the general examination milestone, students can start preparing the dissertation proposal and sign up for MAS.950: preparing the doctoral thesis. The proposal committee must be approved by Mascom, and the proposal must be presented by the end of the year 3 of the doctoral program in a public proposal criticism, which enables nine months before the dissertation defense.

To start the proposal process:

1. The student will submit an abstract (one-sided maximum) and proposed committee members (with a short bios of non-MAS committee members) to MAS employees (by e-mail),
It is also expected that the student informs his consultant and their committee members that we need your approval confirmation by e-mail.

mascom will review and approve the members of the abstract and committee. The students receive the approval by e-mail confirmation from MAS employees.

After receiving the committee / abstract approval, the student may write the full proposal (using the guidelines listed below) to share with their committee. The completed proposal must be submitted by e-mail to the MAS staff.

We would assume that the student also reminds his advisor and committee members (by e-mail to the MAS employees) confirmation of the approval of the proposal document and annotations / comments. This new requirement means that Mascom no longer reads / approved the proposal document. The approval depends on the student committee and checked by the MAS employee.

Diagram suggestions guidelines

The closing suggestion should be a plausible argument for a particular approach to a clearly defined problem with the intention of making an original and significant contribution to knowledge in the field.

The proposal should include the following:

• title page
• Abstract: A brief overview of the most important goals, questions and expected contributions.
• Goals or Problem Station: Which general problem treat you (often illustrated by a scenario)? Why is this a significant problem? What are your motivations? What makes this a particularly suitable problem for a MAS dissertation?
• Research questions: What specific questions do you ask?
• background: the intellectual frame and the historical context for the dissertation, including related research (with literature references). This section can be derived from the written component of your general examination.
• Research Plan: How will you do your research? Which methods do you use? How will you evaluate the results?
• Expected results and posts: What results do you expect? What is new in the proposed research? Remember that a promotion by definition is an "original and significant contribution to the field". What will you connect next to the document (physical artifacts, software, demos, videos, etc.)?
• Timeline: A number of milestones that serve as examinations on adequate progress. Obviously subject to change in view of the assets of research life! Do not forget that there must be at least nine months between the suggestion criticism and the dissertation defense.
• resources required: Which device or other resources are needed?

As soon as the MAS personnel receives the completed proposal (with the consent of the committees), the student may plan their suggestion criticism. Mas employees can book the room and make the announcement. Please allow at least 2-3 weeks after the final proposal until the date of criticism.

The student will present in a public criticism (see below). Subsequently, the committee members will give the consultant and the student (by e-mail) a written feedback. If necessary, the student may need to edit or rewrite parts of the proposal.Mas and Mascom shifts the decision of the consultant on this topic, based on the content of the comments of the committee.

Proposal critician guidelines

The suggestion critique consists of:

• a minute public presentation (open to all members of the media laboratory community)
• a 15-minute Q & A meeting with the general audience
• a 30-minute private session with the full dissertation committee
