The writing of a literature review is often the most demidest part of the letter of an article, a book, work or dissertation. "The literature" seems (and often) massive. I have helped it helpful to be as systematic as possible if you complete this Gargantuan task.
Sonja Foss and William Walters * describe an efficient and effective way to write a literature test. Your system offers an excellent guide to achieve the massive amounts of literature for every purpose: in a dissertation, a m.a. Thesis or an article or book in every field of study. Below is a summary of the following steps as well as a step-by-step method for writing a literature verification.
Step 1: Decide for your research areas:
Before you start looking for items or books, you decide which areas you want to research. Make sure you only get articles and books in these areas, even if you encounter fascinating books in other areas. A literary test where I am currently working, for example, researches barriers for higher education for undocumented students.
Step two: Search for the literature:
perform a comprehensive bibliographic search of books and articles in your area. Read the abstracts online and download and / or print these items relating to your field of research. Find books in the library that relevant and check it. Set a specific time frame to how long you are looking for. It should not take more than two or three dedicated sessions.
Step Three: Find relevant excerpts in your books and articles:
exceed the contents of each book and the article and explicitly look for these five things:
1. Claims, conclusions and insights on the constructs that examine you
2. Definitions of terms
3. demands episode studies relevant to your project
4. Gaps that you notice in the literature
5. Disagreements about the constructs that examine them
If you find one of these five things, enter the appropriate excerpt directly into a Word document. Do not summarize, as summary lasts longer than just tapping the excerpt. Make sure you follow the name of the author and the page number after each excerpt. Do this for each article and book that you have in your literary stack. When you're done, print out your excerpts.
Step Four: Code of Literature:
Get a few scissors out and cut out each excerpt. Now sort the pieces of pieces in similar topics. Find out what the main topics are. Place each excerpt in a thematic pile. Make sure every touch goes into a pile. If there are excerpts that you can not find out where you belong, separate them and walk back to see if you need new categories. When you're done, put any stack of notes in an envelope labeled with the name of the topic.
Step Five: Create your conceptual scheme:
Type, in great font, the name of each of your coded topics. Print that and cut the titles into individual sheets of paper. Take the blocks of paper on a table or a large work area and find out the best way to organize them. Are there ideas that go together or are in dialogue with each other? Are there ideas that contradict each other? Move around the paper slide until you come with a way to organize the codes that are useful. Write down the conceptual schema before you forget or someone cleans your paper slide.
Step Six: begin to write your literature test:
Choose any section of your conceptual schema that you can start.You can start everywhere because you already know the order. Find the envelope with the cutouts in them and place them on the table in front of them. Find a mini conceptual scheme based on this topic by connecting these cutouts that say the same. Use this mini-conceptual schema to write down your literature check based on the above sections. Do not forget to involve the quotes when writing so as not to lose who said. Repeat this for each section of your literary test.
If you fill in these six steps, you have a complete design of your literature review. The great thing about this process is that it collapses in manageable steps, which appears enormously appearing: writing a literature review.
I think that the system of Foss and Walter is ideal for writing the literature test for a dissertation because a Ph.D. The candidate has already read well in his field by graduate seminars and comprehensive tests.
It can be harder for M.A students unless they are already familiar with the literature. It is always difficult to find out how much you have to read for deep meaning, and how much you need to know what others have said. This balance depends on how much you already know.
For people who write literature reviews for articles or books, this system could also work, especially if they write in a field with which they are already familiar. The mere fact, to have a system, can make the literature review much less discouraging, so I recommend this system for all, which is overwhelmed from the prospect of the prospect of a literature review overwhelmed.
