Dr. Bocchinos thesis, titled "An effective system and rating for deterministic standard parallel programming," describes the design and evaluation of a new Java-based object-oriented parallel language designated as Deterinist Parallel Java (DPJ). DPJ uses a novel effect system to ensure determinism by default at the compilation time. This means that parallel programs are guaranteed to carry out deterministic unless non-destemistry is explicitly prompted. Furthermore, DPJ is carefully controlled in the DPJ and strong security guarantees are subject to compilation time, including freedom of data races. This is in contrast to the shared memory models in widely used use today, such as threads and locks (including threads in ordinary Java). These models are inherently non-deterministic, no way to not check or generate that a calculation is deterministic, and can even have unintentional data races that can lead to strange and unexpected behaviors. Finally, DPJ can verify that the applications of object-oriented framework conditions comply with their effect specifications, ensuring determinism and other security guarantees for framework.
