Paraphrasing effectively

In academic writing, the paraphrasing of the ideas of another author is customary in research papers. Paraphrasering takes the ideas of an author and represents them with their own words. To effect this effectively, you should avoid similar Word phrases and set structures of the source used. However, paraphrasing is often a challenge - as a writer, you must balance the balance between the promotion of the author's message and prevent plagiarism by indicating the source by the ideas come. Below are some steps as you want to rewrite effectively and some examples of inappropriate and appropriate paraphrases.

Tip: Check the assignment request. For some assignments, the professors may prefer to use only paraphrases. If it says "no direct quotes", you have to write everything from external sources.

How description

    .
  • If you cry, make sure that you are exactly representing the source. As a writer, you should avoid imposing your own meaning on the paraphrase.
  • After you have selected a section you are interested in paraphrases, read it a few times to make sure you understand the author's words.
  • If you are confident confident in your understanding of the author's words, put the passage aside and write how to write the paraphrase without viewing the source. This will rather use their own words and structures, rather than mirroring the author.
  • Check the source to ensure that the ideas are displayed exactly, and you use original words and sentence structures.
  • Although the words are written by them, paraphrases must contain a quote because they provide information from a specific source. Look at your order to check which citatile you need to use.

When to write down

    .
  • Paraphrases are used when ideas communicates from a source, possibly quote more clearly than directly.
  • If the formulation of the source is not clear or specific enough, paraphrases are preferred. A direct quote should only be used if the absolute best way is to express an idea.
  • If you explain general ideas from one source as a particular passage, paraphrases are preferred.
  • If your source material has a long quote from which you want to use information from, you sometimes better use a paraphrase, so you can cut and highlight the important parts of this passage.
  • In general, papers written in APA format are preferable to direct quotes compared to direct quotes. Papers written in the MLA format have more accurate quotes that must be referenced by the source (such as quotes from a movie or novel).

Underneath, we have some examples of adequate and inappropriate paraphrases to help you better understand how it effectively encompass in your letter.

In these examples, we have contained a quote from an exterior source and three different paraphrase examples. These paraphrases include explanations why it is an inappropriate or suitable paraphrase.

Original Translation

"Whether the hero is ridiculous or sublime, Greek or barbaric, Gentil or Jews, his journey varies little essential plan.Popular stories represent the heroic action as physically; The higher religions show that the act is moral; Nevertheless, it becomes surprisingly low differences in the morphology of the adventure, the character roles that are involved, the won wins found. If one or another of the basic elements of the archetypal pattern is omitted by a specific fairy tale, legends, ritual or myth, it is to be somehow or others implied - and the omission itself can speak the volumes for the history and pathology of speaking the example , as we are going to see "(Campbell, p. 30).

Campbell, J. (2008). the hero with a thousand faces (3rd ed.). Novato: New World Library.

Inappropriate paraphrase

Campbell (2008) argues that the journey of the hero is essentially the same, whether it is a popular story or a story from the higher religions; In fact, there are surprisingly low deviations in the adventures, character roles and victories with all stories (p. 30).

This is an inappropriate paraphrase because the author uses words and phrases (eg "popular history", "the higher religions," "amazingly little variation" and "in the adventures, character roles and victories") that are formulated directly from the source. The author has not only used the same words, but they also put them in the same order and structure as the original source. Although they placed a quote at the end, they are still expected to put quotation marks around these phrases to show which words belong to the author and what words are the author.

Inappropriate paraphrase

Essentially, the journey of a hero follows the same basic structure, as history develops with the exception of religious stories, because the heroic actions tend to be morally based.

This is an inappropriate paraphrase, as the writer did not shape the importance of Campbell. Quote argued Campbell that religious and popular stories have the same structure, even if the conflicts appeared on the first glance. This does not reflect in the passage above, when the writer says, "the journey of a hero follows the same basic structure as the story develops with the exception of religious stories." In addition, the writers did not include an in-text quote when they used Campbell's ideas.

Suitable paraphrase

Campbell argues that all stories from fairy tales for religious stories have the same basic elements and structure for the journey of a hero, even if one or two elements may not be explicitly displayed (p. 30).

This is a suitable paraphrase because the author uses new sentence structures and rates to accurately and effectively convey the ideas of the author. In addition, the author includes a quote to indicate where the information comes from.
