Every day I start my ELA class with the reader's time. This is a time for the students to access a number of texts. I use this time to conference with students, collect data on class patterns and trends with independent reading and available to provide individualized support.

In the previous lesson, students learned to define the plagiarism. The next step is to discuss paths to avoid it by looking at the differences between paraphrasing, summaries and use of direct cartresses. While these three concepts can look teen to some, I think it's important to highlight them as the students are not used to doing this type of work with the research letter. While they are summarized by the eighth grade, they may not clearly summarize the work of others to support their own thinking.

I start the lesson by using the plagiarism, a paraphrase, etc. on the purpose, etc., PowerPoint on the Smartboard. This section focuses on the slide 5 screenshot. This serves as a reminder for the instructions for this part of the section. The students then read the quote, paraphrasing and the summary handout from the online writebab of Purdue. This is a fantastic website to find information about the writing process. Since the students read the handout, look for answers to the following questions that are on the slide 5:

  • Why can a writer use quotes, paraphrases and / or summaries?
  • What are the steps to take if you want to summarize or rewrite a original text?
  • When should you use a quote in your letter?

You read the article and search for answers to these questions. Depending on the class, you can turn this into partner work. This is great if students have to work together their thinking. Another possibility is to work this as a large class. This is advantageous if students have to constantly focus. I think it's great if students perform the article and answer the questions with a partner, and then we discuss the answers as class.

The one question that I really mark is number 1: Why use quotes, paraphrases and summaries. It lists different reasons for the use of each of them, and I have students who take a step further and decide what the best would apply if they try to get a certain point. One of the reasons is, for example, examples of several views on a topic. we discuss if it would be best to use a paraphrase, summary or quotes for it. While all three can work, we discuss that the paraphrase is best for you to have more information about each example.
