Academic Writing: Research Papers: A short guide
- The writing of a research paper is a process so that you sometimes have to reverse. It requires patience and time management.
- start your research early
- ask for help from the research assistants and the Studenting Commons
- There is no stupid question!
- determine the goals and scope
- Look for keywords that describe main tasks for the assignment
- raise yourself ... find something new. Originality counts!
- defend yourself ... justify a position
- establish yourself ... expand your expertise
- a solid research question (why? How? When? When?) Can help you to work on a solid thesis statement
- avoid too close a question, or you may not find many research sources
- break the project into the work in Brocken (Note: Plan these chunks in your calendar)
- Check the notes of class instructions / assigned measured values ??
- use the library databases to find relevant magazine items and other resources
- For the best database for your topic, ask a librarian, or browse the research leaders for your interest area.
- work from the general to specific, e.g. Background information first find
- for background information - use encyclopaedias, lecture notes, textbooks
- for books - search the catalog
- for article - search databases appropriate for your topic
- for a definition - check a dictionary
- rate critical what you have found
- a thesis expresses its main position and predicts what your paper is discussed
- A solid dissertation is divisional companies, which requires the revival of evidence (eg their research)
- You do not have to complete your thesis until you collect your materials and wrote at least one design!

Rate what you have found
- found too many sources? You may need to restrict your topic
- found too little sources? Expand your topic or choose other relevant keywords
- choose scientific magazines on popular magazines
- are your sources relevant? Biased? Too old?
- is the information you found on Google from a reliable source?
Sense for your research sources
- Use keywords to make it logically organized your materials
- Refine your thesis statement based on research materials
- Create a "functioning" outline to play your evidence and order of the presentation
- design of your paper based on this plan
revise your design
- examine according to coherence ... the total "connectedness" of ideas; Paragraph unit
- Check on cohesion ... logical connections between sentences
- check your style ... is your sound suitable for your audience? Is your wording clear and concise? Are you adequate with conditions and concepts in your discipline?
- Check on joint errors. Note: Print your design and drive with the line, and / or read it loud.

- Avoid plagiarism: Take the self-directed tutorial
- Use one of the standard citation styles: APA, MLA or Chicago; Inquire with your instructor if you are not sure what to use. The library has for every guides.
- draw all your quotes while you go. You'll be glad that you have done when the time comes to write a bibliography!
