Step 1: Determine your central application

In philosophy, they write a series of orders, from short investigations of a single philosopher argument to longer papers, in which they develop an extended argument to defend their central claim. Note if you write an argumentative paper, remember that you make a discussion about a philosophical application that probably occurs for decades, if not centuries. Philosophical questions can have several reasonable answers, and every answer will have stronger and weaker arguments in the defense. Their goal is to test the validity of the argument that examine them and add their perspective to discussion.
Your central claim may be:

  • An error or limitation in an original argument or an acceptance is based on
  • One reason why the argument is original, illuminated or otherwise effective
  • clarification of a claim that is unclear or underdeveloped
  • a needed distinction in a term or a premise
  • a defense of a philosopher argument of another
  • a claim that can be a whole philosophical tradition
  • your own original claim

Whatever your requirement, make sure that you support it with evidence and is deficient within the length of the paper.

Step two: offer background - "They say"

Since you enter a running conversation, your readers have to know what others have already said. Even if your audience knows the conversation, your interpretation can be new. In this section you offer the foundation of your argument. They align their argument through the way they introduce the elements of the original argument to which they answer. Just add what the reader needs to know to follow your argument and avoid biography and history. If the original argument is long and complex, only the premises that are necessary for their discussion discuss.

Step three: Defend your claim - "I say"

You now add your answer (your thesis) to the current conversation. Their thesis is the position they accept with evidence to support their noise. You want your reader to listen and react to your claim, so make sure you explain the relevance in the current discussion. (Note that steps have two and three multiple parts, and you may need to mix the steps. Make sure you differ your ideas from the original ideas.)

Step Four: The counter-arguments - "They say"

The next step is to introduce the answers of the opponents to their argument. What could be a smart person saying? What are the weaknesses and defects of your argument? Be honest; Confirm the limitations of your argument. You could quote an existing criticism. Clarify with your professor how much time you should issue for the addressing of counterparts.

Step Five: Your Defense - "I say"

Now they defend their argument against the counter-arguments. It's okay if you can not appeal to any critique as long as you have selected an argument that you can defend reasonably. It is not expected that you do not solve any problem (especially because there is no right answer). The recognition of weaknesses in their argument and counter-arguments raises their credibility; It shows that you have considered all the pages of the problem. The defense of your argument should show the reader why the position you selected is the most logical.

Other advice:

  • make your structure obviously; The goal is a clear narrativer thread. The parts of their argument should follow a logical order to defend their work.
  • Your topic sets should clearly explain how every idea is associated with the previous ideas. You should be able to call the topic sets in the order and see the logical sequence of thinking.
  • , however, be of the length of their sentences and paragraphs. Philosophy papers often fight with complex ideas. Try to write as simple and clear as possible. Linking to many ideas can create confusion together.
  • You do not have to reveal the entire scope of your argument in your thesis set.

  • explicitly make your claims and assumptions (eg "I will take on determinism and show that the free will is still possible").
  • Remember, you do not have to find a definitive answer to a large philosophical problem. It is better to make a strong little requirement than a weak broadland.
  • Explain the argument of opposition fairly fair. If your reader knows that you are not fair, you lose credibility.
  • support you an argument because you think it sounds logical.
  • do not claim to have proven an argument if they have only stimulated strengthen or weaknesses.
  • avoid arguments that no one really stops and is easily disgusting.
  • Clear, real or hypothetical examples may be effective in particular for ethical arguments, but a dark personal anecdote may weaken a claim.
  • concludes with a summary of what they wanted to say in their paper, the impact of their argument, questions about further exploration and / or restrictions on their argument. Be modest; Not overwhelmed.

  • Write sure, and use simple, direct language. Make sure you define technical terms early (usually mention first).
  • The use of direct quotes helps you to explain the views of other philosophers exactly, but summary and paraphrases are effective if the exact wording is not required. Ask your professor how much direct quote is appropriate.
  • also ask your professor if the first person "I" is acceptable.
  • so long-burdened so long, rhetorical questions can be helpful to shake your next point, and shows defects and the introduction of your solution.
