I love to give presentations, but I recognize that I am in a unique position: I can choose the topic, the time and the location.
I really feel for those in the company world that stared at the screen trying to find out what to say to a presentation to say that they are committed.
It reminds me of George Costanza, who struggles a conversation about risk management.
How do you make a presentation a quick and easy process? Not you. It takes a lifetime to prepare.
Now I am currently reading Scott Berkunos "Confessions of a Public Speister", and this passage can be the most important lesson in the whole book (although I'm not finished, so you're from):
The problem with most bad presentations I see is not speaking, the slides, visualizations or one of the things that people possessed. Instead, it is the lack of thinking ... all good public speaking based on a good private thinking.
So true. When I contract a presentation, I'm rarely in the position of attempting to dream of teaching, to dream of examples or research data. If something, the biggest task decides to omit evils and examples.
That's because I have been thinking about these topics for years, and I have a strong point of view before a long time ago.
Bertra's continues to tell the story of the Gettysburg address written on the back of an envelope. However, it is not like Lincoln just the speech about the carriage ride and down his thoughts. He had wrotted with these problems and ideas for years.
In fact, Lincoln could probably have been able to create the speech without notes (though it may not have been so poetic).
That's what great oratories can do. Much of Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream speech speech" on the fly "of bits and pieces of earlier speeches and sermons.
And Bill Clinton Famous from a great speech when the wrong version was loaded into the teleprompt.
Great speakers start as big thinkers.
Okay, we are not all master drirers. What are some lessons we can speak and present mortals for our own? Here are three things to consider:
It's never too early in your career to think about how you see the world, and the principles for which you are standing. For me, as a communicator, there are certain "truths", which I have, my dear:
These principles offer me a solid ground in every situation, no matter if I help a customer to solve a tricky problem or act with a difficult question on stage.
What are your core annealing? Define them, internalize them, and they will lead their thinking through every situation.
Here is one of the biggest challenges that my customers face. They have a great speech that appears - a national sales conference, an annual day or industrial event - and the strategies and programs that you want to speak of will still be formulated and assigned.
How do you give your audience the feeling you know what you do in the face of the ambiguity? First start with what you know.Second, Be open to what you do not know - and explain why .
This part is critical. People will take it "I do not know if they take the time when they take the time to explain why they do not know.
Finally, you fall back to your guiding principles. As in, "I can not tell you how the new compensation system will look like, but here is what is conducting our decision-making ..."
(note that this advice is consistent with my second communication principle. See how does it work?
The great thing about big events such as conferences is that it helps helpful to drive a glacial decision-making in a company. New product must be completed in good time to resolve on the BIG trade fair, or the marketing strategy must be completed at the annual sales meeting.
Of course, these types of important events are difficult to cancel or switch off.
However, there are many other document presentations that we do to mitigate - or even take a total of a total. You do not have to accept any invitation to serve on a panel or to tackle your professional or industrial association.
We say yes to these things, because it's hard to say no. Or we think at the time when the event rolls around, we will be ready.
If you have doubts, if you have a great value to help, or you are not sure if you have the time to bring something good, but in all means, turn the opportunity down!
In the meantime, always think about the problems that will confront your business or your customers. Transform the ideas in your head and be open while you read, work and make yourself around the world.
Keep an eye according to examples, analogies, stories and data that supports your point of a few. Save it in your storage banks or write them even better.
This way, the next time you stand the flashing cursor on your computer screen, the ideas flive rather naturally flow. And you will rather create your presentation with less pain.
